About Us

Welcome to Savannah Canoe and Kayak, the answer to your paddling needs on the Georgia Coast. Savannah Canoe and Kayak provides top quality canoeing and kayaking instruction, guided tours, and camping adventures to the barrier islands of the Georgia Coast. Our lesson and tour services are unparalleled in professionalism, yet are relaxed and informal. We use our paddling adventures as a tool to educate and inform others on our dynamic marine environment. No trip to Savannah is complete until you've experienced the unique culture and natural beauty of the Georgia Coast!

"We moved to the Georgia Coast for one reason... the paddling. With dozens of undeveloped barrier islands, lazy rivers, and a terrific climate, the little discovered Georgia Coast is a painter's paradise. That's why, in 2003, we started Savannah Canoe and Kayak. In 2010, after thousands of on-water trips, classes, and adventures, we opened Savannah's largest paddlesports retail store. We are pleased to provide a full range of services, both on-water and off,  to promote the great sport of paddling, and to play our part in helping to preserve this beautiful coast. We hope you will join us." - Kristin & Nigel Law, Owners

Staff

Nigel & Kristin Law - Owners Nigel & Kristin have built SC&K from the ground up, starting in 2003 with two boats in the backyard. Today we strive to offer a quality experience for our customers. We use certified guides who have a vested interest in our community and are stewards for protecting the coastal environment. We bring our on-water expertise into the retail store to make SC&K a hub of paddlesports information. Our retail store offers one of the largest selection of boats and gear in the South East. We endeavor to maintain integrity with all our customers. Come on by - we'd love to meet you!

Zachary Smith - Home grown in Savannah, Zach has a personal love for the environs and an enthusiastic personality for sharing it. You may be lucky to catch him playing stand up bass in one of Savannah's finest establishments as a member of the Accomplices. Kudos to Zach for completing the AT Trail.  Zach works the shop floor, leads trips, teaches, and assists with our kids camps. "The best advice I ever received was from Nigel years ago. He said that in order to be a good kayak guide, I needed to learn something else entirely. Go figure."  ACA Coastal Kayak Instructor, ACA Level 3 Surf Kayak Instructor, Wilderness First Responder

Steve Braden - When doubt arises, we say " What would Steve Braden do?". In 20 years of sea kayaking, Steve has paddled the GA Coast many times. A keen naturalist, Steve is dedicated to protecting and preserving our area. He has also hiked the AT. Combined with his powerful and consistent technique, his teaching style is calm, kind and methodical. Steve helps with our camping expeditions, instruction, full day, and half day programs. "Being on the water is being in a dynamic environment. If you do nothing, something will happen."  ACA Coastal Kayak Instructor Trainer, ACA Advanced Open Water Sea Kayak Instructor, BCU Coach 3 A1 Instructor

Mike Robinson - Mike maps the earth. As a research scientist at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, he contributes to our better understanding of coastal morphology, bathymetry, and tidal flow. Mike has been paddling and interpreting the GA Coast longer than anyone we know. There is not a bird he cannot identify or a gastropod he has not fondled. Mike's knowledge of kayak design and construction is as comprehensive as any you'll ever come across. Aside from being the USA-NDK warrantee repair guy, he also throws a mean oyster roast.  Mike's newest endeavor is as partner in the rockin' Saltwood Paddles company.  ACA Open Water Sea Kayak Instructor - Retired

Preston Orr - With over ten years of guiding in the Savannah area, Preston has a vast set of experiences out on the water. This shows in his confidence and ability to lead a safe and informative trip, whether in sea kayak or sit-on-top. Preston is a keen fisherman and was instrumental in kick starting our kayak fishing program. He is also captain of the SC&K Kayak Fishing Team. He can be seen on many a day fine tuning his 'strategy'. Preston is a talented artist and can capture the wild beauty of the coast with a paintbrush and sharp eye.

Tony Varvoutis - Tony comes to us from the mountains where he was a whitewater paddler and guide. He was first introduced to paddling in the bayous while fishing with his grandpa. Eventually he started guiding on the Chattooga River. After stints guiding from New Zealand to Appalachia, he moved to Savannah. We have quickly converted him to coastal whitewater...ie.. the surf. When not teaching social studies, Tony brings an upbeat personality to SC&K on the water as a guide and assisting in the retail store. ACA Level 2 Sea Kayak Instructor Candidate

Ben Fontenot - Originally from Louisiana, Benjamin discovered sea kayaking here in Savannah, Georgia. His passions of history, ecology, and paddling come together as Ben helps us both in the store and on the water as a guide with our half day tours.  Ben is an accomplished woodworker and has launched his own line of Greenland Paddles. In his downtime Ben enjoys hiking, trail running, museums, and playing bass guitar. ACA Level 3 Sea Kayak Instructor

Nick Scoville - Nick has contributed to the team as an instructor and guide over the years, and is now back on board again. We are glad to have him! He has been to the Pacific Northwest and is full of tales of surfing orcas on over falls and sailing the Inside Passage. Nick currently lives on a sailboat here in Savannah, splitting his time between work and play. As an avid paddler, Nick is a tribute to learning your passion inside and out. Welcome aboard!  ACA Open Water Sea Kayak Instructor

Erin Krebs - Erin is a local school teacher by day and an outdoor enthusiast by weekend. Erin has moved from casual paddler, to skilled paddler, to both sea kayak and SUP guide, to being part of our retail team. She has also taken on the role of maintaining the Captain's Blog. When not out on the water, she also enjoys getting away to the mountains for some climbing. Erin is proof that we should strive to learn, grow, and reshape our lives all the time. Her positive outlook and infectious attitude is a joy to have around.

Rebecca Goggans - Rebecca is a transplant from the Pacific Northwest whose primary job is working for Oregon State University Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences. She enjoys contributing to SC&K as a guide on our half day and full day trips, as well as having a particular love for camping and sea kayaking expeditions. Her dedication to the sport of kayaking and to preserving natural habitats makes her a true asset to our company. ACA Level 2 Sea Kayak Instructor

Keith Motola - One day while driving through the Savannah Wildlife Refuge, we saw a guy standing on the edge of a creek, wrestling to shore a monster fish. We thought, "That's our guy!" We weren't mistaken. Keith is the fish whisperer and, quite rightly, a Pro Angler representing Feel Free Kayaks. As part of the armed forces, Keith wins the award for having the biggest gun. As a member of the SC&K Fishing Team, Keith attends tournaments, gives lectures, and adds to our kayak fishing program.

Kevin Kelly - Kevin's background as a guide for Orvis prepared him for becoming a kayak fishing guide. Kevin has recently moved here from the bayous of Louisiana, and has fished all of his life. His other job is truly as a fisher of men as he is a Reverend for a local church. He is a member of the SC&K Fishing Team, specializing in fly fishing.... the Super Fly Guy.

Colleen Heine - She plays a mean fiddle, that girl! Besides being an accomplished musician, Colleen works hard to promote artists and small businesses in Savannah. She is a support to SC&K with advertising and promotion. Pictured here building her own skin on frame kayak. "Playing folk music reminds me each day to stay grounded. Working with SC&K reminds me the importance of making choices."

Martha Haynes - We are fortunate to have Martha heading up our SUP Yoga program. Martha has been many things in her life, but now she is centered on just being. She has a great love for the outdoors, and is an avid camper, hiker, and paddler. Martha lives on the banks of the Wakulla River, and works at Florida State as an education researcher. She is a graduate of the TCC Ecotourism Institute Green Guide program, and a Leave No Trace trainer. Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT), ACA Essentials of Kayak Touring Instructor,  BCU 2 Star Paddler

Savannah Canoe & Kayak is proud to be associated with this group of southern paddlers. Let us make full use of their knowledge, talents, and personalities. What a great team it is!
