STROKE REFERENCE CHART

USE THIS PAGE TO REFERENCE THE DIFFERENT STROKES AND THEIR CORRECT FORM.

 Strokes break down into three categories.

1/ Strokes for momentum. 2/ Strokes for maneuvering. 3/ Strokes for support.

As you progress, you will join strokes to incorporate all three of these criteria..

Note: The best stroke is the stroke that gets the job done efficiently, effectively and safely.

 

FORWARD.

Wind up torso - extend arm for good 'catch'.

Unwind torso- drive paddle and boat forwards.

 

SWEEP.

Wind up torso.

Push boat away from paddle blade.

 

STATIC DRAWS.

(Also: Bow, Stern & Sculling draws.)

Turn your trunk the way you want to go. Paddle blade is deep.

 

BRACING

LOW - Push down on paddle.

 HIGH - Pull up on paddle.

 

LOW BRACE TURN

Under way - sweep, followed by low brace position.

 

SCULLING for SUPPORT

Useful practice stroke..

REVERSE (also REVERSE SWEEP)

Wind, Unwind torso.

 

BOW & STERN RUDDERS

Under way - static paddle at the bow.

Under way - static paddle at the stern.

 

SIDE SLIP or  DRAW on the MOVE

Under way - pull boat towards paddle.
