MEGA NEUTRON RV
The latest offering from Mega is a reworking of
the very successful Neutron. First impressions of this boat are
..'wow momma'. The Neutron RV is tweaked and tuned for more action
with more style.
So, what has changed ?. Well, a deeper
cockpit enabling the re-positioning of the seat. This is in line
with the Merlin and the Reflex and is a great addition. The
foredeck has been 'chinned' , one would imagine to increase
stiffness and rigidity, plus it looks very cool. The rear hump has
been smoothed out and volume slightly increased. The rails have
been hardened up slightly further back. And that's about it.
That's all it needed. This is the most complete all round surf
boat on the market today. It suits a variety of breaks and
conditions. It has great wave speed and handling characteristics.
It maintains it's width long enough to make it stable and fast
through big foam piles. The Neutron has the most popular Mega
model on the market but that's about to change.

MEGA CHARGER
Charger by name and charger by nature. This boat needs
to be steered to the thick of the action and once it's
there..."holy brown trouser, Batman !". This is an east coast
boat, designed by an east coast boater.
Short, flat, fast and very agile, with a nice punchy
nose and squirtable tail, so getting
out is not as hard as one may think for such a short boat. Did we say
fast already? It's 24 " wide but carries this width all the way
forward to the nose rocker. Late, steep and aggressive is the way to ride
this craft. Coming from the mountains and a play boating
background, Spencer Cook designed a boat that surfs like a demon, but is
also very suited to pulling off a variety of tricks and
acrobatics....just watch Spencer surf this thing, getting air on a
regular basis. Designed specifically to get the most out of our
inconsistent waves and boating sessions. It rocks. We like it...a
lot.

MEGA IMPULSE
A great high performance intro boat that will make any
whitewater or sea kayaker feel right at home. Wide thigh position and
foot room make for the most comfortable Mega boat yet. This is a great
'first' surf kayak, lowering the steep learning curve quite
considerably.
It's wide at the tail, making it easy to catch waves. It also slides and slashes through top turns easily. The width
provides a very stable paddle out and a quick take off. This boat
is ideal for the whitewater paddler transitioning into surf kayaking.
Another great new addition to the Mega lineup!
Length: 7'6" Width: 26.7"
Cost: Standard $1949.00
MEGA MERLIN
The latest design from Mega is the Merlin. A slightly
larger volume, slightly longer version of the Reflex, with a few tweaks
along the way. Widest part of the boat has been moved back just behind
the hips. Loads of nose rocker, flat hull. The front rails have
been softened forward for more forgiving transitions. For a faster release from
the wave face, there is a shallow V on the hull at the tail. This
also translates to super responsiveness in the rear. All
in all, its a comfier, friendlier, faster Reflex with exceptional
performance. Not recommended for beginners, geeks, or
those of a nervous disposition. This boat is very 'high performance'. It
rips.

MEGA REFLEX
Combining the dynamic traits of the Mega Fury with the modern
design, speed and power of the Neutron, this new Reflex has got to be a
winner!
The Mega Reflex has the same completely flat hull design and low, sharp
rails that give its big brother, the Neutron, such speed. The seating
position is back from the center, with fins near the stern allowing the
front of the kayak to be released easily, enabling tight turns. These two
boats also share the new-shape deck – more foot room and a higher knee
position is a big improvement on paddling comfort for me, and there's a
bump of extra volume on the back deck.
Where these two boats differ is in their length. At just 7' 1” the
Reflex suits a very dynamic, fast and tight surfing style, making great
use of the speedy new hull in the pocket of the wave. At nearly six foot
tall I was convinced there was no way I would fit in the Reflex …
until I managed to jump straight in the boat, with plenty of space
around me. It's a Tardis!
The Reflex is amazingly fast. Its low, sharp rails gripped the wave
exactly where I wanted, never losing height or the power of the wave.
Carving hard and fast out of the bottom turn, I found the grip of the
rails combined with the shortness of the boat driving me vertically up
to the lip. This sets up perfectly for either a waveski-like slashed top
turn or getting airborne.
That bump of extra volume on the back deck, the “Power Pocket”,
was very noticeable in stopping a few back loops whilst paddling out,
and seemed to help me get my weight forwards when making sections, and
for some awesome speed down the line.
I like a dynamic, “short-board” style boat – the Reflex is so
much fun! - Review by Philip Watson

MEGA SCARAB
The Scarab from Mega is the middle child of the Tron
family. Larger than a Neutron, smaller than a Megatron, it fits
perfectly those paddlers who find the Neutron too lively but are put off
by the length and size of the Megatron.
The Scarab really rips on the wave and feels very
similar to the Neutron, despite the additional 1.5" width. Bottom
turns are very tight and the boat actually feels looser than the Neutron
- this is due to the wider fin box arrangement - setting the fins
forward really makes this a radical boat. Don't be put off by the extra
width, this boat is blindingly fast and rail to rail transition is as
quick as the Neutron for the larger paddler! I first tried the boat with
moulded plastic fins; a fast 6ft drop down the face made the fins hummm!
This was put right by swapping to Mega custom composite fins that are
stiffer; this also made for sharper bottom turns, you really can throw
your whole body into the turn and crank the boat over and the slightly
higher knee position allows you to change your centre of gravity when
carving quickly. The Scarab has neutral secondary stability when
throwing it over, which makes it very predictable allowing you to focus
on what you are doing and what you want to do next. The Neutron is a
great boat, but if you are a chunky 200lbs plus and want a performance
kayak you should try the Scarab.

MEGA MEGATRON
The big brother of the tron's, the Megatron is made for
the serious cake eater in the family. On the wave it’s a neutron,
meaning it’s brilliant. There are few distinguishable differences
between the two boats other that the float factor of having that extra
volume.
This is without doubt the best surfboat available for those who are
of a “slightly larger build” - Glyn Brackenbury, BCU Coach Level 5 Surf
I love my Neutron and this boat is very similar in the way it feels
and paddles, as it is simply the larger version. When I first got in the
boat I could immediately feel there was enough space and volume to grow
into it. The paddle out made me feel invincible, as the extra volume
made it feel like I was paddling a tanker! When sitting out back, the
Megatron was very stable. Because of the extra volume, I was floating
right on the surface of the water. This made take-offs effortless as I
was pushing barely any water. Even in small surf the Megatron didn't
fall off the back of the wave and I could easily regain the wave after
miss timed top turns. As I am small for the Megatron, I found it fairly
hard to engage the rail into bottom turns and found myself really
leaning into the wave, but this would be no problem for someone of the
recommended weight in the boat. I think it's great for bigger guys to
have access to the latest design in high performance surf kayaking. - Philip

MEGA BULLITT S
The latest offering from Mega is the Bullitt S, an
IC style boat with HP set-up. At the maximum length for an HP class boat
the Bullitt can catch just about any size wave. An easy paddle out
makes this a great boat for those wind blown surf sessions or a river
mouth break that requires a long paddle out. With it's
adjustable thigh braces and foam seat it's very comfortable as well as
quick off the mark.
An excellent choice for a wide variety of skill levels
and wave riding styles. For complete novice to soul surfing grand
master, the Bullitt S is fast, fun and easy. This boat is a very stable and
comfortable platform that paddles along the lines of a sea kayak, yet on
the wave face it carves like a dream, it's low volume tail
slashing through turns. All the components of an IC boat, but in a
shorter package and with the ability to add fins... in our opinion,
probably the best addition to the Mega lineup this year. This boat
particularly excels in the X-Tech lay-up.
Pretty much the same boat as the
Bullitt, but a couple inches shorter and with three fin boxes to meet HP
class. Malcolm says...."It was very clear at Mundaka
recently that in small surf the longer boats were catching waves
easier and looking more dynamic. Other situations would be big
beach break days, places with a long paddle out... Mundaka, Santa Cruz for
example."

MEGA SHORT RR's
At only 75" in length this is the shortest of the
short boats. Radical, Revolutionary - A short arse indeed.
Despite it’s ridiculously short length the RR's
performs incredibly well…
Take-Off: With plenty of nose rocker you can get away with some pretty
insane take-offs.
The volume in the rails and wide hull helps it to sit high in
the water and carry speed through the turns. It’s a ‘pocket
rocket’ so you need a pretty steep wave to really get the boat
performing, but once you get going it feels incredible…it’s
surprisingly fast and I was making sections that I didn’t think
possible in such a short boat. On the wave the boat really stable and
forgiving so you can trim the boat easily and glide around the wave, as
well as making really aggressive, slashy turns. On a powerful wave this
boat will fly out of bottom turns and off the lip…this is a BIG AIR
boat!
Summary:
The RR's combines the short playfulness of a freestyle kayak with the
speed and carving ability of surf kayak in a way that I haven’t seen
achieved before. Although essentially a surf boat, it’s short length
makes it nice and playful. If you have a good roll and don’t mind
paddling hard to get out back, you’ll love the performance of this and
all levels of surfers will have fun. - Review by Chris Harvey

MEGA MAVERICK HDP
Based upon the very successful Intruder and Mustang, the Maverick's
performance is astounding. Fast, tight carving turns with great drive
back up the face of the wave. Designed very much along the lines of
modern wave ski hulls the Maverick turns very much "Off the
Tail" making incredibly tight cut backs and lip turns. Down the
line speed is awesome! There's plenty of room and floatation for bigger
guys 6'3" is no problem! Recent test pilot weighed in at
230lbs, (105kgs). Outfitting includes: three fin boxes, triple
laminate foam pillars, molded seat with foam butt pad insert, adjustable
back strap, adjustable thigh braces, toggle ties and foot blocks.
"I've surfed a few surf craft in my time but
I've never had such a great first session as when I recently paddled the
Mega Maverick. With its classic highly rocked bow it was no trouble at all
to paddle out through the breaking surf skimming up and over the biggest
white wave faces with ease. Once out beyond the break the Maverick was
quick to move about in, this kayak maintains good boat speed essential in
the surfing environment." - Simon Hammond,
World Surf Kayak Champion
But the best features come out during the ride. Starting with an amazingly
easy take off, due to its relatively wide tail, followed by incredible
speed down the face and the ability for this kayak to carve fantastically
sharp bottom turns. This kayak has some great design features including
three well positioned fins, a sharp rail from the centre of the boat all
the way to the tail and a beautifully rigid and wide hull which gives this
kayak all the speed and stability you could wish for.
This is a versatile surf kayak suitable for a wide variety of sizes and
abilities.
Flatter rocker for
speed and stability. Fishtail ideally suited to small waves and radical
moves. Medium rails are forgiving and suited to all types of
surfing.
We love this boat. It's an exciting ,
quick and very responsive kayak. Responds instantly to trim control and
is super slashey in the tail. The X-Ray is aimed at the smaller guys, ladies, juniors.
Significantly different from the Maverick, it is more orientated towards
playboat type moves due to its low volume ends.
Based upon the Revenge composite kayak the X-Ray 2005
has been tweaked and scaled up for production in High Density
Polyethylene to produce a truly superb hard core surf kayak. 6 footers
and cake eaters may have a problem getting
in and out, but once you squeeze in you'll be tail slashing until the
tide goes out.
This
is a no compromise surf machine. Hard rails, razor sharp secondary
release chine. 3 fin boxes, composite seat and hull stiffener. Outfitted with high density,
triple laminate mini cell pillars, fabric
covered foam seat, adjustable back strap and aluminum toggle/leash
mounts. Affordability without sacrificing performance. High Density
Polyethylene offers robust, yet rigid construction for all environments.
Medium rocker for great maneuverability. Low rails hold cutbacks longer and turns really tight.

MEGA NEUTRON HDP
With the flat hull low rails and power pocket rear this
boat is super fast. Ski type arials, slides,360's and floaters are
here! It offers the smoothest flowing ride on mellow waves, the ability to
grip a wave like mad when things get bigger, speed that will alter your
perception on life and carving ability so tight and so smooth you will
feel like your surfing .....a super grippy smooth thing!! The Neutron is
taking the Kayak surfing world to new limits.
"The hull is pure wave ski, flat to maximize speed,
an accentuated constant curve down the rail line to enable drawn out
carves or sharp aggressive directional shifts, and soft into hard rails to
engage the water and surf the boat from the tail. The fins are positioned
directly below the seating position giving the best possible drive from
the turn, and their rearward position means that the boat still feels
exceptionally loose.
The deck is a real departure from previous designs with a large lump
behind the cockpit to give extra buoyancy particularly useful when
paddling out to avoid the inevitable back loops of low volume tails. The
greatest revolution with this kayak though is without doubt the seating
position, it’s dynamic in its orientation being in the rear third of the
boat, and it’s comfortable, with an elevated knee position offering a
far more freestyle feel to the boat.
On the water it goes like the proverbial excrement off the digging
implement, fast, and incredibly maneuverable. This is the first plastic
surf kayak that I have been able to cleanly aerial off the lip."
- Glyn Brackenbury, BCU Coach Level 5 Surf
"I was very interested to try out the plastic version to
see how it compares to the composite design, and also to the other plastic
surf kayaks, the Maverick and the X-ray.
I must say, it surprised me. I was expecting the extra weight of the
plastic to reduce performance dramatically compared to my composite
Neutron. Of course the weight made a difference, but I found it responsive
and not that restricting. This is a world-class top design, available in
plastic only a few months after its launch in carbon/kevlar.
Of the other plastic boats, I find the Maverick is fast down the line
and the X-Ray highly maneuverable. For me, the new design of the Neutron
feels right and does both even better. For you, the good news is that
there's a real choice in plastic surf kayaks now. Try them and find which
suits you." - Philip Watson, England Team Junior
Why are surf kayaks better in the surf than today's planing hull
river kayaks? The answer is pretty simple - speed. All river kayaks
have a pretty large amount of tail rocker (upturn in the back of the
boat). You need this in a river because the water in rivers is very
chaotic and unpredictable. Tail rocker and anti trip rails (edges) are
needed because current in the river can hit your boat from many
directions without any warning. These same things take away from speed.
Tail rocker being the biggest drag in any planing boat. The anti trip
rails also don't bite into the wave as well as those of surf kayaks.
These are necessary compromises in the river, but in the surf - you can
get closer to the performance end of the spectrum.
How do you launch with fins? This is a little tricky, but
possible. You can launch off a sandy beach no problem dragging your fins
through the sand. The fins are strong, but not indestructible - they
WILL break if you side surf right up onto the beach - so its better to
exit the boat when your still in shallow water.
Can you flat spin with fins? Contrary to what you might think,
yes. I do it all the time...mostly when the wave is steep and the take
off is late and I'm in the wrong place. Its not as easy when there are no fins, but can still be done. The
fins are right under your seat, which is about where you spin from.
Having the two side fins in, gives the best performance compromise
between finned turns, and spins. But the truth is, once you experience
projected carves, you won't want to "waste" another wave on
flat spins. If you think about snowboarding, which is more fun spinning
straight down the hill, or carving and shredding sweet turns, with the
occasional spin thrown in for style?
