ACA
PROGRAMS
| Nigel Law, Steve Braden and Ben Lawry run our ACA
Instructor Training program and between them have over 50 years
of teaching experience. All our programs are conducted on Tybee
Island from either The Outdoor Inn or rented Tybee beach
property.
To become an ACA Instructor, the candidate must successfully
complete a two part training course: an IDW, or
Instructor Development Workshop, and an ICE- Instructor
Certification Exam.
During these 3 day workshops a great deal of information is
presented to candidates on topics such as concepts of
paddling, teaching and learning styles, risk and safety
management. Information will not only be presented by instructor
trainers, but also by fellow candidates taking the
workshop. There is a certain amount of prior homework and study
required before the start of the class. These courses are not
recommended for beginners or those new to the sport. We
highly recommend Instructor candidates come to these
courses with a wide range of prior paddling technique,
instruction and some teaching experience.
ACA Instructor Certifications are awarded at five
levels:
Level 1: Introduction to Kayaking (not discipline specific)
Level 2: Essentials of Kayak Touring
Level 3: Coastal Kayaking
Level 4: Open Water Coastal Kayaking
Level 5: Advanced Open Water Coastal Kayaking
Instructor
Candidates will be instructed and evaluated in the following
areas:
- Ability
to teach and model strokes at the appropriate level .
- Effective
teaching ability that reflects both organization,
preparedness and knowledge.
- Good
general knowledge of paddle sports techniques, equipment and
the ACA organization.
- Strong
safety awareness and rescue skills.
- Professionalism,
leadership, and good interpersonal skills.
